Perfume gift season: how shoppers ask, and what to fix in your catalogue first

Gift buyers are the shoppers least able to name a fragrance. They give you a person, an occasion and a number. Here is how those three show up, and what to check in your catalogue before the season.

Three ways shoppers ask

  • Recipient: “My boyfriend wears Dior Sauvage … similar, but not EXACT.” The recipient’s current scent is the brief.
  • Occasion: “His & Hers, sandalwood notes!”, a wedding gift from people who do not know fragrance.
  • Budget: usually a number written into the sentence. Gift shoppers in other categories write things like “a classy rollerball gift set around $50”; the form is the same in yours.
  • The fear underneath: a gift that turns out “smells like grandma”. Shoppers want a reason they can check, not only a name.

Prepare your catalogue before the season

  • Write the notes and scent family into the description of each fragrance, in plain words.
  • Name gift sets as sets, and say who they suit and for what occasion.
  • Keep price and stock current in Shopify; the assistant reads them from your catalogue, and the catalogue is re-read as your products change.
  • Mention close relatives in the description when you honestly have them, such as “in the family of” a well-known scent. A “like X, but not exact” request needs something to match.

What the assistant does with a gift request

It reads the request in the shopper’s words and picks one product from your catalogue with a one-line reason. The name, price and stock on the card come from your catalogue by product ID. The reason is written by the AI, labelled as such, and can be wrong. If nothing in your catalogue fits, it says so and, where your consent settings allow, takes a contact and writes the request to your Requests tab, so you see which gifts people wanted and you did not have.
