Product search for a board game store: “four players, 45 minutes” is a search

People choose a board game by who will play and for how long. “Four players, forty-five minutes” is the whole query, and filters by price or publisher do not help with it.

What shoppers actually type

Shortened phrasings from public r/boardgames threads, September 2026. Shoppers rarely type a product name; they type a situation.

  • “Games for more than 4 players, any recommendations?”
  • “A party game best for 4 players”
  • “Midweight Euro that scales well from 2 to 4 players”
  • Replies ask back which games the person has played and liked, and mention playing time such as “30–45 minutes”

Why a search box misses them

Player count, time and weight are properties of a game, but “scales well from 2 to 4” is not a number you can filter. The asker’s taste also matters: the same question has different answers for different groups.

What the answer looks like

This is an illustration of the form of an answer, not a real store or a real product. In a live answer the product’s name, price and stock are read from your catalogue by product ID. The reason line is written by the AI, labelled as such, and can be wrong.

Shopper writes

“Something for four of us, around 45 minutes, not too heavy.”

Assistant shows

One game from your catalogue, as a product card with the name, price and stock exactly as your store lists them.

Reason line

An example of the kind of line it writes: “Plays four, plays quickly and the rules are light, which fits your group.”

What it will not do

It can only use what your catalogue says. If player count, playing time and complexity are written in the product data or description, it can use them; if they are not, it cannot know. It does not replace your collection filters by publisher, price or category.

When nothing fits

If nothing in your catalogue matches, the assistant says so instead of showing something almost right. Where your consent settings allow, it offers to take a contact (email, phone, WhatsApp or Telegram) and writes the request to the Not found view of your Requests tab, in the words the shopper used. You see what people want that you do not stock.
