Product search for a perfume store: shoppers describe a scent, not a name

Nobody types the name of a fragrance they have not met. They write what it should smell like, what it should be close to, and who it is for. A keyword box and a brand filter answer none of that.

What shoppers actually type

Shortened phrasings from public r/fragrance and r/Perfumes threads, September 2026. Shoppers rarely type a product name; they type a situation.

  • “Fragrance that smells like cold fjords … cold water, trees and tundra”
  • “Perfume that smells like a beach bonfire”
  • “My boyfriend wears Dior Sauvage … similar, but not EXACT”
  • “His & Hers, sandalwood notes!”, asked for a wedding gift by people who are not fragrance experts

Why a search box misses them

Two of these ask for an image, one for a close relative of a known scent, one for a gift for two people. None contains a word that is in a product title. Filters by brand, size and price cannot express any of them.

What the answer looks like

This is an illustration of the form of an answer, not a real store or a real product. In a live answer the product’s name, price and stock are read from your catalogue by product ID. The reason line is written by the AI, labelled as such, and can be wrong.

Shopper writes

“Sandalwood, a wedding gift for the two of them.”

Assistant shows

One fragrance from your catalogue, as a product card with the name, price and stock exactly as your store lists them.

Reason line

An example of the kind of line it writes: “A warm, sandalwood-led scent that suits both of them, which is what you asked for.”

What it will not do

It cannot smell anything. It matches what the shopper describes to what your catalogue says: notes, scent families, descriptions. A “like Sauvage, but not exact” query is only as good as the notes and comparisons written on your product pages. The better your descriptions, the better the pick. It does not replace brand or size filters either; keep those.

When nothing fits

If nothing in your catalogue matches, the assistant says so instead of showing something almost right. Where your consent settings allow, it offers to take a contact (email, phone, WhatsApp or Telegram) and writes the request to the Not found view of your Requests tab, in the words the shopper used. You see what people want that you do not stock.
