Shopify Search & Discovery alternative: start with it, add us for described needs
Search & Discovery is free and made by Shopify, so start there. We do not argue that you should replace it. OneSite Assistant is worth adding only if your shoppers describe what they want and the built-in search answers badly.

Choose Search & Discovery if
- You want filters, synonyms and search tuning at no cost, inside Shopify’s own admin.
- Your shoppers mostly search by product name, type or SKU.
- You prefer to depend on the platform and install nothing else.
Choose OneSite Assistant if
- Shoppers write needs, not names: an occasion, a person, a number of players, a mood.
- You want to see the questions your search could not answer, in the shoppers’ own words.
- Your catalogue is niche enough that the useful detail is in descriptions.
Side by side
Search & Discovery: filters, synonyms and search settings for your storefront. OneSite Assistant: one product for a described need, with a reason.
No filters, no synonym groups, no product recommendations by rule.
Search & Discovery is free and built in. Ours is on the pricing page; in the Shopify app it starts with a free trial.
What merchants report about Search & Discovery
Reviews on its Shopify listing, read 2026-10-01, mention themes worth knowing before you rely on it. Treat them as reports from some merchants, not as a verdict:
- Limits on the number of filters and filter values, and on very large collections.
- Weak filtering by size and availability for some catalogues.
- A run of reviews since June 2026 reporting poor search results, such as irrelevant results or searches by SKU that stopped working. This may be temporary; check your own store.
Using both
Yes. Leave Search & Discovery in place for browsing and keyword search, and add the assistant block for the shopper who does not know what to type.
Test it on your own shoppers’ words
Do not decide from a feature table, ours included. Open your store’s search log and take five real queries: two that found the right product, two that found nothing, one written as a sentence. Run them through the tool you use today and through the OneSite Assistant demo, and compare what comes back.
If the tool you already use answers them well, keep it. If the sentence-style queries come back empty, that is the gap we are built for.
Try it on your store
Install OneSite Assistant from the Shopify App Store. In the Shopify app you approve the plan right after install and start with a free trial. See the pricing and the questions worth asking before you install.
