Product search for a bookshop: shoppers remember a plot, not a title

A reader often cannot name the book. They remember a plot, a decade, a genre, and sometimes what it is not. People on forums answer these questions for each other because the shop’s own search box stays silent.

What shoppers actually type

Shortened phrasings from public r/tipofmytongue threads, September 2026. Shoppers rarely type a product name; they type a situation.

  • “Dystopian novel about twins who switch places”
  • “WWII boys’ adventure novel about downed pilots in a rescue buoy”
  • “Graphic novel from early 2000s featuring teens that shape shift into animals (not Animorphs)”

Why a search box misses them

The query mixes plot, era, format and an exclusion. A keyword match on the title cannot use any of it, and a genre filter cannot express “twins who switch places”.

What the answer looks like

This is an illustration of the form of an answer, not a real store or a real product. In a live answer the product’s name, price and stock are read from your catalogue by product ID. The reason line is written by the AI, labelled as such, and can be wrong.

Shopper writes

“A dystopian novel about twins who switch places.”

Assistant shows

One book from your catalogue, as a product card with the title, price and stock exactly as your store lists them.

Reason line

An example of the kind of line it writes: “A dystopian story built on two twins trading places, matching your description.”

What it will not do

It can only recommend a book that is in your catalogue, and it reads the description, not the book. A good pick depends on a description that says what the book is about. It will not name a book you do not sell; the shopper’s request goes to you through Requests instead.

When nothing fits

If nothing in your catalogue matches, the assistant says so instead of showing something almost right. Where your consent settings allow, it offers to take a contact (email, phone, WhatsApp or Telegram) and writes the request to the Not found view of your Requests tab, in the words the shopper used. You see what people want that you do not stock.
